| About MetroConnect Schools |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| MetroConnect Network schools are public school academies open to all school-age children who are residents of Michigan. Nine of the schools are located in the city of Detroit while one is located in Oak Park, a community which borders Detroit on the northwest side. "Public school academies" in Michigan are often called charter schools. Charter schools provide parents with options and the right to choose where and how their children will receive a public education. This fundamental right lets parents decide which school or educational setting works best for their children. Just like any public school or school district in Michigan, a public school academy provides a free education. There is no tuition and the school is open to all students who are eligible for the grade or age ranges offered by the school. A charter school may not discriminate in its pupil admissions policies or practices on the basis of intellectual or athletic ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, status as a handicapped person, or any other basis that would be illegal if used by a school district. When there are more student applicants than the number of spaces available, the school must hold a random lottery. Most charter schools, including those that participate in the MetroConnect Network project, have long waiting lists. This is because they are so popular with parents. As you might imagine, many parents, but especially low income and minority parents, are willing to wait for the educational option that they believe will provide the best learning environment for their children.
